Want to know more about your tour manager? We talk to Tom all things rugby & Sky High Sports.
Tom or 'Tmac' (as he is more commonly known at HQ) is a graduate from Northumbria University and joined the team in the Summer of 2018 after finishing his degree in applied Sports & Exercise Science.
He is a winger by trade and has played his rugby at East Grinstead RFC, Hartpury College, Northumbria University Mens Rugby & Tynedale RFC. On the cricket field Tom is a threat with the new ball and a swashbuckling middle order batsman.
Since joining SHS Tom has made a huge impact both in and out of the office. A fans' favourite amongst our touring sides, you will come across Tom chaperoning on our Irish & French tours.
My earliest memory of rugby was probably was the 2003 RWC Final.
I don't remember too much of the actual game but I recall the atmosphere and hype after the game was incredible and rugby certainly got my attention.
The first time I actually played rugby was at my secondary-school in year 7. I ended up playing for the School team as we had played a bit in PE and I was alright at it. At the time, my best mates Dad was the East Grinstead rugby coach so I went along to a training session with him and haven't looked back since.
Northumbria Mens Rugby 2nd XV
This was as a special team that I had the pleasure to play in during my first year of University. Looking back there are outstanding players that have gone on to play a National & International level of rugby.
The best part of this team is that we didn't realise how good we were at the time and it was just playing rugby for enjoyment.
It was also the best team to be apart of because we all got on very well. The most I have enjoyed rugby is when its just you playing with a bunch of mates all the same age with no egos, and the post-match shenanigans goes without saying.
Will Muir or Skippy
My favourite player to have in the team would be England 7s & Bath Rugby player Will Muir, who I played with in the Northumbria University 2s team. He just has this ability to make things happen out of nowhere. Playing outside him was great, he'd do it all!
Otherwise, I'd pick one one of my best mates George (Skippy). He was scrum-half and I was fly-half for East Grinstead and it was an unreal experience playing with your best mate every week, always laughing and believing we were absolutely class when, looking back, we thought we were a lot better than we actually were...
Rugby gives you so many good memories, almost too many to chose from, but I've got 3 stand-out moments to date.
1. Playing the annual Varsity fixture at St James' Park with Northumbria University was up there. As a massive football fan it was a pretty surreal experience.
2. There's actually not that many opportunities to win a league. So going unbeaten the whole season with East Grinstead 2’s is very memorable indeed.
3. The Tynedale RFC Senior rugby tour to Amsterdam. Legendary.
